Once upon a time
I believed in fairy tales,
Frogs and snails and puppy dog tails.
Once upon a time
I believed in love letters,
Happy ever afters and go-out-and-get-hers.
Once upon a time
I believed in love songs,
Giggles and laughter and dancing all night long.
Once upon a time
I believed in poetry,
Rhyming couplets and someone meant for me.
Once upon a time
I believed in memes,
Wisdom and riddles, intelligent things.
Once upon a time
I believed the recounts
Of the prince and the dragon and slaying of doubts.
Once upon a time
I believed in jokes,
Mistakes, good intentions and old-fashioned folks.
Once upon a time
I believed in dreams,
Aiming and striving for much better things.
Once upon a time
I loved words of all sorts.
Now I only believe information reports.
From the title and through each stanza, you offer a lot of food for thought. Having recently taken implicit bias training, this stanza stood out to me:
“Once upon a time
I believed in jokes,
Mistakes, good intentions and old-fashioned folks.”

This poem has the interesting justaposition of believing in innocent fairy tales and hope to the hard reality of the horrible news of today – and can only believe in the “informational reports.”
